THE PROBLEM
This intervention has faced in particular the restoration of all the environments of the Lower Church in which there are sculptural decorations painted on the wall, in addition to stucco, metal and stone elements. For each material, it has been analyzed the state of conservation, has been sought to identify the causes of degradation and consequently different working methods have been developed .
THE METHOD
The beautiful lowered vault which dominates the central room was de-whitened by several layers of superimposed colors in order to bring light to the stuccco worked surfaces . On the portions of the walls which are executed in plaster, the original finishes in stone designs have been identified in order to reproduce an environment in color according to the vault and with columns and pillars made of polychrome marbles, which were in turn cleaned and filled. The gilded bronze altar was clean with a patina that dulled the shine as well as sculptures in stone or terracotta have been restored. On the corridor walls, wall painting have been brought to light and wall decorations present on the back walls of a polychrome marble column and the other have been restored.
